Movable Bridges

Cass Hayward has designed many movable bridges and roll-on roll-off link spans now in operation. The movable bridges include Bascule Bridges, Swing Bridges, Vertical Lifting Bridges and Retractable Bridges. The bridges have been to support highways and railways and some for pedestrians and cyclists only. In ports our roll-on, roll-off link span bridges are required to articulate in all of these ways (sometimes in combination) and often represent the more complex arrangements that we have encountered. Our roles have been, for the most part, as designer of new and refurbishment projects but we have also acted as design checker / project reviewer. On behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers we drafted Part 8 of BS6349, a Code of Practice for the design of RoRo Ramps, Linkspans and Walkways.
