Extending the Life
Cass Hayward has been involved in a variety of projects targeted at upgrading the strength of highway bridges which have been shown to be inadequate for future use. Our roles have also varied including for assessment of existing capacity, design of strengthening and assisting Contractors with methodology for implementation at site.
At the Port of Dover we were engaged to identify residual fatigue life in their RoRo link spans and for Staplegrove Road Bridge in Taunton we were able to develop increased strength by over-slabbing the existing metal deck plating and girders. The metalwork of Totterdown Bridge at high level over the River Avon in Bristol was refurbished and repainted as per our specification and for Rastrick’s 1849 cast iron bridge over the Wye in Chepstow we assisted in the design of repair works including for fitting of replacement fasteners and an assessment of temporary stage loading conditions. We have been involved twice with the A14 viaduct strengthening over the East Coast Main Line and in the first phase this involved 3D modelling of both the underslung secondary support beams and of the existing concrete box girders to ensure the steelwork could be practically installed at site.
